DSL Expansion Announced, Provisioning Time Reduced

September 5, 2001
Glossary Items:

Cape.Com has begun accepting orders for this expanded DSL service. Please call 508-539-9500 or email support@cape.com to place your order for DSL service.
_________

Cape.Com has great news for those longing for DSL service. On September 20, 2001, the loop length to qualify for DSL service will increase to 18,000 feet from telephone company central offices (currently it stands at 15,000 feet). In addition, the amount of time from placing a DSL order to getting it provisioned on the line has been dropped from 20 business days, to 10-15 business days, effective immediately.

Although this 3,000 foot expansion may seem rather minor, a great deal of businesses and residences fall just over the current 15,000 foot restriction. These extra 3,000 feet in all directions adds another mile plus in radius, and encompasses many DSL-longing customers. At 15K ft, the Cape is roughly 40% distance-qualified. This expansion to 18K ft increases it to approximately 65%. Cape.Com's DSL service to all other Massachusetts areas is also being extended to 18K ft towards the end of September.

Cape.Com offers DSL services to businesses and residences throughout Eastern Massachusetts (all except 413 area code) in speeds up to 768/768. This expansion of service is currently limited to speeds of 768K down/128K up.

It is important to know that as loop lengths increase, more technical limitations may arise when undergoing the qualifying process. There is more to DSL than strictly being distance-qualified. The quality of the line comes into play, whether it is all copper, and a number of other telephone company related factors can determine whether DSL is readily available or not. Generally, the longer the line from the central office, the more susceptible it is to bridge taps, wire gauge and inside wiring problems. These limitations may prevent DSL from working or from attaining the average speeds even though they physically fall within the 18,000 foot loop length.

Effective August 27, 2001, provisioning time for DSL orders has been reduced to 10-15 business days, from 20 business days. This is a dramatic reduction of wait time, up to two weeks, and comes with great anticipation and relief. Many DSL customers are scrambling upon notification that their service will be discontinued by many defaulting DSL providers, the latest victim being Rhythms, based in Colorado.

"Cape.Com will do everything we can to streamline the process, and work with these stranded DSL customers to find a seamless DSL solution," said Suzanne Cosgrove, Director of Marketing.

While Cape.Com can continue to check loop lengths from DSL inquiries, they cannot accept a qualified DSL order beyond the 15,000 foot length until September 20th. Given the shorter provisioning time, new expanded service orders can be up and running by early October. DSL inquiries including address and telephone number(s) may be sent directly to support@cape.com.
