Cape.Com Offers Free Spam Filter to Control Unwanted Email

April 30, 2001
Glossary Items:

The World Wide Web offers many great conveniences, opportunities and resources for people all over the world. Unfortunately, it does have its downfalls, and unwanted, illegal bulk email (spam) is one of them. Be assured that Cape.Com has strict anti-spam and privacy policies, and will not sell, rent or give your email address to a third party. If you are receiving unwanted email, most likely it is because at some time you unknowingly gave your email address out over the internet via an on-line form, newsgroup or joined an Internet mailing list. And once spam begins, it tends to have a snowball effect.

While there is no way to eliminate spam entirely, Cape.Com gives you the power to control spam from your own desktop. The Cape.Com Spam Filter is a free service available to every Cape.Com customer, and can be easily activated, updated and customized through Cape.Com's convenient On-Line Accounting feature. This Spam Filter allows you to control incoming email according to certain words detected in the TO, FROM and SUBJECT fields. Any email that does not meet your defined restrictions will automatically be filtered into a separate junk email box under your username. This junk email box may be accessed through Cape.Com's Webmail, using your same password, and its contents are automatically deleted after 20 days.

Since most bulk email is not sent directly to your address but rather to a list of recipients, 80-90% of spam can be quickly filtered by simply adding your email address or domain to the TO field filter. You may also allow the "@cape.com" TO filter default to screen out spam. For those who have elected to be on specific email lists, adding these list names to your TO filter will assure that you continue to receive the email in your regular box.

If you are receiving on-going bulk email from certain addresses, you may enter this address into the FROM filter, and any incoming email from this address will be automatically junked. Unfortunately, spammers are clever, and they tend to change the FROM field frequently to avoid detection. Using the FROM filter is an option, but may be difficult depending on the sophistication level of the spammer.

Many times you can instantly detect spam by viewing the SUBJECT line. Spammers will use anything to get you to open their email, and phrases containing the words FREE, MONEY, and HOT are all too familiar. Use your Cape.Com Spam Filter to sort incoming email which contains keywords or phrases in the SUBJECT field that you consider to be undesirable.

In addition to the Spam Filter, Cape.Com cautions users not to respond to spam, as tempting as it may be. Such a response confirms that your email address is valid, and will inevitable cause more unwanted email. Reserve your regular email address for family, friends and colleagues, and use an associate user address for newsgroups and online forms (where your email address becomes public).

Established in 1994, Cape.Com is the only locally-owned and operated Internet Service Provider on Cape Cod, with two offices located in Mashpee at the Prime Center and Mashpee Commons. Their specialties include high-speed DSL and dial-up internet connections, secure e-commerce, website development, along with Wide Area Network (WAN) and Local Area Network (LAN) solutions. They currently provide WAN services and support to nearly 200 businesses throughout Massachusetts, and DSL and Dial-Up Internet access to over 5000 customers throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
