Cape.Com History
Cape.Com was formed in 1994 to serve the digital communication needs of South- eastern New England. We grew from a computer consulting group; the principals each having over 25 years of experience in computer hardware and software design and development. We recognized, at that time, that the Internet would become the dominant means of delivering digital information to both the consumer and businesses. The explosive growth of the Internet has certainly exceeded our own expectations of 1994. Locally-owned and operated with offices in Mashpee, MA at the Prime Center and Commons, rest assured, Cape.Com plans to keep it that way! We take pride in our fast and friendly customer service, expert technical support, high-quality services and reasonable prices which have made us the fastest-growing ISP in the region. As of early 2004, we have 19 Cape residents who comprise our staff. Cape.Com is led by long-time Cotuit resident, Vernon Grabel, President. Vern is a Cornell graduate and computer engineer with over 25 years of hardware and software design experience. William Rapp serves as VP of Operations. A Harvard graduate and Cotuit native, Will was the founder of Cape.Com, with Grabel, and now lives in his favorite hometown. Anthony Sadera, a Falmouth resident, is VP of Web Development. A graduate of Boston University, Tony joined Cape.Com in 1997 with a broad range of experience in software development, media, and graphics. Laura LeBlanc came on as Customer Service/Tech Support Manager in 1999. A graduate of Cape Cod Community College, many of our customers long to hear the knowledgeable, reassuring voice of this Hyannis resident! Suzanne Cosgrove of West Barnstable joined Cape.Com in early 2001 as Director of Marketing. A graduate of the University of Vermont, Suzanne brings with her over 10 years of high-tech marketing experience In March 2002, Patrick Murphy completed our management team as Director of Sales. A resident of Centerville and graduate of Boston College and UMass-Boston, Pat offers over 10 years of business development experience in the IT and Telecom sectors. Joining in summer 2003, Apaarjeet Chopra, aka "Chopi", in the position of Art Director & Web Project Manager. A resident of Mashpee, Chopi has an extensive art/design background and schooling, and has a following not only here at Cape.Com, but the world over. Cape.Com accepts the 2003 Business of the Year Award. From the beginning, we've been focused on building a corporate, networking and computing infrastructure that's robust and responsive to the needs of our users. A few examples include: Our on-line accounting system, built entirely in-house, is integrated with all of our terminal, web, and mail servers. When services are modified with our web based accounting system, those changes occur immediately. We've consistently maintained that, in order to provide a quality level of services, we need to have direct administrative control over critical network services. Cape.Com owns, operates, and administers all of its web, mail and terminal servers; as well as all critical routers into the Internet. Many ISP's outsource their services; particularly terminal servers. This limits their ability to control the scope and quality of services provided. Network monitoring and physical security is paramount to a reliable, consistent network. Our Mashpee network center is in a facility that had been, in a previous era, a commercial bank. All critical servers are housed in a below-grade vault. All equipment is powered by battery backed UPS devices which are, in turn, backed by a Natural Gas fired generator. The vault is environmentally conditioned with a split system AC unit. Automatic monitoring is in place to identify any system or network error so it can be quickly remedied. Power and vault temperature are also automatically monitored. System failures trigger our monitors to send beeps and email to our system administrators. This has been taken to the point where Cape.Com sysops get a status beep twice a day to indicate system status. The status indicates that all systems are operational and includes the AC power status and the current temperature in the vault. The software and hardware associated with this monitoring system was developed internally at Cape.Com and continues to evolve. In 1998, Cape.Com expanded its offerings to include web site design and development services. E-commerce, secure server, shopping cart systems, and electronic payment systems provide tremendous benefits to companies that need to promote their products in an international marketplace. In June of 2000, Cape.Com began offering high-speed DSL access with a carefully planned strategy. This strategy has proven itself, as Cape.Com is now the leading independent ISP offering DSL in Southeast Massachusetts, while many others have come and gone. In 2004, Cape.Com stayed ahead of the game by introducing Broadband Voice calling and wireless hotspots to complement their existing services. Our focus continues to be Internet access and connectivity, website and email hosting, WAN/LAN consulting, web development and automation, and customized B2B solutions. Cape.Com, Inc. is a privately held Massachusetts Corporation. The people that own it are the same people that run it.
