Windows 95/98 Manual Configuration
This document contains information on how to install and configure Windows 95/98 Dial-Up Networking. Installing and configuring Dial-Up Networking will take between 30-60 minutes, depending on your skill level. Users should read through all the steps before proceeding. Windows 95/98 users struggling with their connections or in need of a quick and easy Internet install are urged to order a copy of our CD-ROM Easy Internet Toolkit. Step 1: Installing Dial-Up Networking - Press the Start button, choose Settings..., then Control Panel
- Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon
- Select the Windows Setup tab, choose the Communications option, then Details...
- Is the Dial-Up Networking option selected? If not, select it:
- Select Dial-Up Networking, click OK, then choose Apply
- Windows 95 will now install the drivers needed for Dial-Up Networking. Make sure you have your Windows 95 CD or floppies at the ready.
Step 2: Installing the Dial-Up Adapter & TCP/IP Protocol- Press the Start button, choose Settings..., then Control Panel
- Double-click on the Network icon
- Choose the Configuration tab
- Is Dial-Up Adapter present? If not, add it:
- Choose Add, double-click on Adapter.
- Scroll down and select Microsoft and Select Dial-Up Adapter, then click OK
- Is TCP/IP present? If not, add it:
- Highlight Dial-Up Adapter and choose Add
- Select Protocol, then Add
- Choose Microsoft, select TCP/IP, then click OK
- Select Dial-Up Adapter, click Properties..., then select the Bindings tab and make sure the TCP/IP box is checked.
Step 3: Configuring Windows 95 for Dynamic IP addressing- Press the Start button, choose Settings..., then Control Panel
- Select the Network icon
- Select TCP/IP, then click Properties...
- Choose Obtain an IP address automatically
- Select the WINS tab and choose Disable WINS Resolution
- Select the Gateway tab, click in the New Gateway field and enter four zeroes (0.0.0.0), then select Add
- Select the DNS Configuration tab, select Disable DNS
- Click OK, then select OK again, and answer Yes to the Reboot Now prompt.
Step 4: Configuring the Cape.Com Connection Icon- Double-click on the My Computer icon
- Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon, then double-click on Make New Connection
- Type in Cape.Com in the "Name for the computer you are dialing" field, then select the Configure button.
- Find the General section and enter 115200 for the modem speed, then click OK.
- Click the Next button and enter the Cape.Com. For those with Call Waiting, preceed the number with *70,
- Click OK, then select the Finish button and your new Cape.Com icon should appear in the Dial-Up Networking window. Proceed to Step 5.
Step 5: Dial-Up Properties- Select the Cape.Com icon, click the right button on your mouse, then choose Properties...
- Select the Server Type... button.
- Choose PPP from the drop-down menu. Confirm that Log on to Network is NOT checked, and that TCP/IP in the Allowed network protocols section IS checked.
- Select TCP/IP Settings and confirm that Server assigned IP is selected. Now, select "Specify Name Server Addresses", and in the Primary DNS field enter, 204.107.252.1, and in the Secondary DNS field enter, 204.107.252.7.
- Select OK/OK to return to the desktop.
Step 6: Making the Connection to Cape.Com- Double-click on the My Computer icon
- Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon, then double-click on the Cape.Com icon
- Enter your Cape.Com username ( lowercase, no more than 8 characters )
- Enter your Cape.Com Password
- If you have an external modem, confirm that the unit is turned on
- Choose the Connect button. Windows 95 will dial and upon connection present you with a "Connected" message.
You should now be connected to Cape.Com and ready to use any of your Internet applications. If you cannot connect, then verify that you are not using a connection script: - From the Desktop, double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
- Highlight the Cape.Com icon, then click File, Properties.
- Click on the Scripting tab (If you do not have a Scripting tab, click on the Start button, then Programs, Accessories, then Dial-Up Scripting Tool).
- If there is a file entered in the box labelled File Name, then delete it, click OK, and try again to connect.
