CGI development, SSH/Telnet access to your FTP/Web site

Glossary Items:

Cape.Com, Inc. provides users with SSH/Telnet access into their FTP/Web site to enable users to test and execute cgi-bin scripts used in the processing of web input or other tasks. Cape.Com makes this service available at no additional cost.

Details

  • Contact support@cape.com to enable SSH/Telnet access on your account.
  • Before using a cgi-bin script, you must first create a 'cgi-bin' directory within the root directory of your FTP site.
  • Move all scripts into this directory and make sure to make the scripts executable, i.e, 'chmod +x filename'.
  • When referring to these scripts with a web browser, the format of the URL should be:
    • Basic FTP/Web and Enhanced FTP/Web Accounts:
www.vsX.cape.com/~username/cgi-bin/scriptname+arg1+arg2+... (Where "X" is the machine name of your FTP site, i.e, vsa, vsb, vsc, etc.., and "username" is your Cape.Com username.)
    • Virtual Hosting Accounts:
      www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/scriptname+arg1+arg2+arg3....
    • When referring to cape.com scripts such as form_submit, located within the web server's, cgi-bin directory, the format of the URL should be: www.yourdomain.com/ccgi/scriptname

Note:

  • We're running perl 5.6.1; located here, /usr/bin/
  • MySQL Distribution 3.23 and PHP 4.2.2
  • The Java Runtime Environment ( jre ), V 1.1.7, is available. Contact support@cape.com if you're interested.
  • We do support SSI (Server Side Includes).

IMPORTANT

  • We advise users to rigorously test their work before uploading it to a Cape.Com server. Only upload scripts or other CGI programs that are debugged and known to work correctly. Cape.Com servers are configured to shield themselves and other users from rough user scripts. However, should your scripts malfunction and cause Cape.Com server crashes or other problems, we reserve the right to shut off telnet access for the account. As a result, all scripts would then need to be reviewed and uploaded by a Cape.Com employee ($100/hour).
