How does it work?

Compression. Jet uses a compression technology that dramatically reduces the size of the data needed to display full web pages, thus delivering them faster to your PC. Jet primarily compresses text and any data that is not already compressed (most web images are already compressed).

Caching. Jet improves your browser's response time by using proxy and compression technologies. Jet back-end servers retain and reuse web pages and page contents that have been previously visited. The caching technology insures that all the sites visited are the newest available, and you are assured that all the content is current. If a web page, image or portion of a page is changed, Jet intelligently recognizes the change, and seeks out the new file, transparently in the background without intervention, and updates it.

Will Jet increase my dial-up connection speed?

The Jet program is based on compression technology and although your surfing speed will increase, your dial-up connection speed to the Internet will not increase. Therefore, you will not see a speed change in your connection box when you initially log on. You will, however, notice that websites load much faster. Jet works with both our standard local access numbers as well as our National Dial-up network.

Can Jet be used with other connections?

Yes, Jet can also be used with DSL, ISDN, and other dedicated connections. Since these are faster connections, you will notice an increased speed, but perhaps not as significant as with a dial-up connection. Your connection to the Internet must be through Cape.Com, Inc. for Jet to function.

Will Jet work with my email program?

No, Jet is designed to increase the speed of web browsing (http only), and does not affect the speed of sending or receiving email, email attachments or related email software programs. Webmail is also not affected, as Jet will not increase the speed of any secure transactions performed over the Internet.

Why does Cape.Com offer Jet for free?

Unlike the majority of Internet providers, Cape.Com prefers to develop in the open source environment*. This way, we do not have to rely on expensive, proprietory solutions from any specific vendor. This means we can bring more service enhancements to our customers, and in turn, tailor them to our systems while investing minimal cost (although development time is invested.) It also means that Cape.Com, as a company, and you, as our customers, are not driven by the ups, downs and whims of software firms which require per client and server fees to use their software. The benefit to our customers? Lots of great customized enhancements for free or next to nothing compared to what other ISP's charge.

How will Jet affect my PC?

The Windows Jet program is approx. 650K in size, and will take less than 5 minutes to download over a 56K connection (Mac and Linux versions are much smaller). Jet installs as a standalone program that will run only when you instruct it to (optionally or automatically.) Jet installs with minimal impact on system memory, and can be cleanly uninstalled.
