ADSL Hardware Compatibility
For an ADSL modem/router to work over Cape.Com's DSL Network, the modems chipset must support Bridged Ethernet for RFC 1483/ATM with a VPI/VCI pair as follows: VPI:0 Many ADSL modems auto-negotiate the VPI/VCI, while some must have the VPI/VCI set manually, either via a telnet connection or terminal/console access. For example, the Efficient Speedstream 5260 Ethernet ADSL modem must have the VPI/VCI set manually, while Westell's Wirespeed "White" auto-negotiates the settings. A Cisco 827 ADSL router must be configured manually to establish connectivity over Cape.Com's ADSL network. VPI/VCI (Virtual Path Identifier/Virtual Channel Identifier) - The VPI (Virtual Path Identifier, an 8-bit field in an ATM header), combined with the VCI (Virtual Channel Identifier, a 16-bit field in an ATM header), is used to identify the next destination of a cell as it passes through a series of ATM switches. The modem must be compatible with this series of events to operate properly. Compatible Products: Westell Wirespeed "White" Modem (Model B90-36R516-01) Alcatel SPEED Touch Home Netgear Cape.Com will add to this list as we become aware of compatible hardware. Please contact Cape.Com before purchasing equipment elsewhere so that we can verify the hardware's compatibility. Related PagesInformation on business-class DSL services.
