Downloading Attachments

Glossary Items:

  • Is the attachment just too large for your mail program to download? See Large Attachments for more information on the trouble with large attachments, and how to send/receive these attachments through FTP instead.

  • To just get rid of an attachment so it stops jamming your mail program: check your mail with Cape.Com's Webmail program (see the Related Page below), delete any unnecessary messages, and then check your mail again with your regular mail program.

  • Some email programs handle decoding attachments better than others; Eudora tends to do very well with attachments. Eudora Light can be installed from Cape.Com's Easy Internet CD; the commercial version, Eudora Pro, is available at www.eudora.com .

  • Were you able to download the message, but couldn't open the attachment? Your computer may not recognize what kind of file the attachment was. Try saving the attachment to your hard drive, opening the correct program to view the attachment, and then opening the attachment from inside the correct program. (Click here for detailed instructions.)

  • What if you don't have the correct program to open the attachment? (For example, the attachment was written in Microsoft Office, but you use Claris Works?) This is often a problem sending attachments between Windows and MacIntosh computers. The easiest solution is usually to have them send the attachment again in "plain text". Alternatively, there may be a 3rd-party program which will translate the attachment into a form you will be able to read.

  • If you were able to open the attachment, but it looks like gibberish, it may have been encoded using uuencode rather than MIME, which is the standard today. More information on MIME is available from the Related Link below.
