Time Stamps On Email

Glossary Items:

Cape.Com's mail system accepts and sends mail at all times. Your mail is available to you as soon as it is accepted by Cape.Com's mail system, and the system attempts to deliver a message as soon as you send it .

Mail headers, which appear at the top of an email, display among other things the date/time that the message was sent (to be picky, the date/time that the sender's Internet provider's mail system initially got the message). If the time stamp shows a large lag time between sending and receiving a message:

  1. Do you see a similar lag for all messages? If so, your computer may not have the correct date/time setting. To check:

    • Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel
    • Click on Date/Time
    • Verify that the correct date, time AND time zone are displayed.

  2. The person who sent the message may not have the date/time set correctly on his computer. To check:

    • Find the headers at the top of the message.(See the Related Page below if you do not see the headers at the top of the message).

    • Next to the time, you should see a 4-digit number. This number should be the difference between the sender's time, and Greenwich Mean Time.

      • Here in Massachusetts, it should be either -0500, or -0400 (if Daylight Savings Time).
      • If the sender is from another area and you are not sure what this setting should be, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, click on Date/Time, click on the Time Zone tab, then click the down arrow.

  3. Cape.Com does not hold mail to send out in batches, but some mail systems do; verify that the sender's mail system does not do this.

  4. Finally, a message must pass through many different mail systems to get to its recipent; if there are temporary problems with a system or with Internet connectivity along the way, the mail system holding it will wait and try to deliver it later. If you have questions about a specific message, forward the message (including all headers), to support@cape.com .
