Downloading Files From Your Web Browser

Glossary Items:

  1. Create a folder for all files that you download.

This will help you to find the file after you have downloaded it.

    • From your desktop, double-click on My Computer.
    • Double-click on the C: drive.
    • From the top of the C: screen, click File, New, then Folder. A folder labelled "New Folder" should appear.
    • The folder's label, "New Folder", should be highlighted so that you can rename the folder. If it isn't, click the folder just once to highlight it, then at the top of the screen, click File, Rename. The folder's label should now be highlighted.
    • Type Download. This should replace the label "New Folder" with "Download" .
    • Click File, Close to close out of the C: screen, then click File, Close to close out of My Computer.

  2. Get an "unzipping utility" if you don't already have one.

Most files available for download are in a "zipped up" form, to make them smaller so they can be downloaded more quickly. Once you have the zipped up file on your hard drive, you must unzip the file. WinZip is an excellent unzipping utility; it is available from Cape.Com's Easy Internet CD, or, it can be dowloaded from www.winzip.com (this file will already be unzipped when you download it) .

  3. Begin the download

    • Connect to the Internet.
    • Locate the link that will begin the download process and click that link.
    • The "Save As..." box will appear.
    • Make sure that the "Save In" field displays the Download folder that you wish to download to. If it does not:

      • Continue clicking the button with the yellow folder with the arrow pointing upwards until the "Save In" field displays the C: drive.
      • Double-click the Download folder.
      • The "Save In" field should now display the Download folder.

    • Take note of the name of the file you are downloading.
    • Click Save.
    • The "Saving Location" screen should appear, with a dialog box tracking your download progress. Let the download finish. The speed of the download is based on Internet traffic and speed of the remote computer. It is possible that the download rate will be much slower than the capacity of your modem. If any problems occur, or if the transfer stops midway for more than 3 or 4 minutes, click Cancel and try again.
    • When the download is complete, the dialog box will simply disappear. You now have the software on your computer, and you can disconnect from the Internet.

  4. Unzip

    • Open your Download folder by going to your desktop, double-clicking My Computer, double-clicking the C: drive, then double-clicking the Download folder.

    • Find the file you downloaded; it should end in either the extension .exe or .zip

      • If the file ends in .exe, it is already in executable form. You can double-click the file to begin installation.

      • If the file ends in .zip, it must first be unzipped:

        • Assuming you have already installed WinZip on your computer, double-click the .zip file to activate WinZip.
        • A window will appear, displaying the contents of the .zip file with menus at the top.
        • Select the Extract All option from the menus.
        • A dialog box will appear; choose to decompress the new files into the Download folder.
        • WinZip will now take over, and you'll likely see a progress bar as the files in the .zip file are separated into their original, unzipped versions.
        • When finished, you'll probably have an installer program, such as Setup.exe or Install.exe, and a Readme file. Read the Readme first, then double-click on Setup or Install to begin the installation.
