SpamNabber FAQs

Glossary Items:

SpamNabber is a very powerful spam filtering tool available free of charge to all Cape.Com users as a mechanism to control unwanted junk email. The SpamNabber program can be activated, de-activated and controlled through your Cape.Com Webmail.

SpamNabber scans an entire incoming email, searching for characteristics which are common to Spam. Each spam-like component found in an email is given a score. When the total score for an email exceeds a preset limit, the mail is deemed to be Spam and is sent to your junk mailbox.

How do I Activate SpamNabber?

To activate SpamNabber, simply login to Webmail , and, click the Preferences button located at the top of Webmail's main screen. From here, scroll down to the Message Filtering Options section and place a check in the Enable SpamNabber checkbox. Be sure to click the Save button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

What kind of tests does SpamNabber perform?

Email header analysis: Spammers use an array of tricks to mask their identities, hoping to fool you into thinking they've sent you a valid email, or that you've subscribed to their list. SpamNabber attempts to detect these masking tricks.

Email text analysis: Most spam has a characteristic style or content. Phrases which contain offers of free stuff, promotional materials, and disclaimers are searched for by SpamNabber. Excessive exclamation marks and numerous embedded links are also considered.

Blacklists: Spammers will send their email from either known sources or from mail servers, frequently off-shore, which allow mass mailings to be relayed. A number of databases on the Internet, referred to as "blacklists", contain information about these mail servers. SpamNabber looks at the source of the email to see if it originated from one of these well-known spam relaying sites.

Where does mail identified as Spam go?

When SpamNabber determines that mail is spam, it places it in your JUNK email box. You can look at the contents of your junk box using Cape.Com's WebMail tool. When viewing junked mail, details are provided on the specific spam characteristics that were found. Mail delivered to your junk mailbox is kept on our mail servers for 20 days or until 200 messages have accumulated, whichever comes first, and then is automatically deleted.

Please note that mail in your junkbox is not backed up on our servers, and therefore, cannot be recovered. We suggest you check your junk email often, in case a legitimate email was inadvertently filtered by SpamNabber.
