Using The Correct Outgoing Mail Server

Glossary Items:

Outbound email should always be routed through the outgoing mail server of your Internet provider (if you have more than one Internet provider, then use the outgoing mail server of whichever provider you are currently accessing the Internet through).

To protect Cape.Com's SMTP (outgoing mail) servers from unauthorized use, SMTP services are restricted by service level. Customers with the following services are granted access to all SMTP services.

  1. Virtually Hosted Domain customers
  2. Direct Connect customers (ISDN, DSL, T1, Frame Relay, etc.)
  3. Dialup customers with Virtually Unlimited or Pro Plans

Mail relay services (relay.cape.com) are provided as a value added service to our customers. Technical support is limited to verifying that your account type qualifies you to use relay services, and username/password verification.

Please note: those using our Nationwide Dialup Plan must use relay.cape.com as their outgoing mail server. If you find that your access provider won't support SMTP service for your domain, and, your Cape.Com service matches or exceeds the minimum service levels as noted above, see the link to SMTP AUTH below.

Changing Your Outgoing Mail Server to relay.cape.com

To change the outgoing mail server setting in your mail program, contact your Internet provider to get the name of the outgoing mail server, and then follow the instructions below. Cape.Com uses either smtp.cape.com OR relay.cape.com (required for Nationwide Dial-Up)

  • Netscape Messenger (Communicator Version 4.x): Click Edit, then Preferences. Click the plus sign next to Mail & Newsgroups. Then click Mail Servers. Over to the right change the Outgoing Mail Server to relay.cape.com. In the line below that enter your Cape.Com username (without the @cape.com). Click OK.

  • Netscape Mail (Navigator Version 6.x and 7.x): Open the email program and click on Edit at the top of the page, then Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings. Click on the Outgoing Server tab. To the right change the Server Name to relay.cape.com. Check the Use Name and Password box, and enter your Cape.Com username. Click OK.

  • Eudora: Click Tools, then Options. Under Category select Sending Mail. To the right, change the SMTP Server to relay.cape.com, then click Allow Authentication.

  • Outlook Express: Click Tools, then Accounts. Click the Mail tab, at the top of the newly opened window. Click on your Cape.Com account, then, to the right, click Properties. Click on the Servers tab at the top, and change the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) to relay.cape.com. At the bottom of the page check My server requires authentication, then click the Settings button to the right. Select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" to the right. Click OK, then Apply, click OK, then Close.

  • Microsoft Outlook: Click Tools, Email Accounts. Select View or Change, then click Next. Highlight your Cape.Com account and click Change. Change your Outgoing Mail Server to relay.cape.com. Click More Settings, at the bottom of the page. Select the Outgoing Server tab, and check My Outgoing Server Requires Authentication. Below that select Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Click OK, Next, Finish.

Again, if you find that your access provider won't support SMTP service for your domain, and, your Cape.Com service matches or exceeds the minimum service levels as noted above, see the link to SMTP AUTH below.
