Mail Server Security

Glossary Items:

Be assured that Cape.Com has strict anti-spam and privacy policies, and will not sell, rent or give your email address to a third party. Currently, Cape.Com uses the following techniques to curb the amount of SPAM that's introduced into our network and to protect our servers from unauthorized use.

  1. We don't relay.

If incoming mail is not destined for cape.com users, or domains that we host, it's automatically rejected. Mail relay services (relay.cape.com) are provided only as a value added service to qualified customers. Technical support is limited to verifying that your account type qualifies you to use relay services, and, username/password verification. For additional information, please refer to Using The Correct Outgoing Mail Server.

  2. Restricted SMTP access

To protect Cape.Com's SMTP(outgoing mail) servers from unauthorized use, SMTP services are restricted by service level. Customers with the following services are granted access to all SMTP services.

    1. Virtually Hosted customers
    2. Direct Connect customers (ISDN, DSL, Frame Relay, etc.)
    3. Dialup customers with VUL or above.

If users are accessing one of Cape.Com's relay servers(see SMTP AUTH link below), they must ensure that they are using their Cape.Com address or their Virtually Hosted domain address in their email program's "From" address setting.

If you find that your access provider won't support SMTP service for your domain, and, your Cape.Com service matches or exceeds the minimum service levels as noted above, see the link to SMTP AUTH below.

  3. Users Control Unwanted Email

Cape.Com provides users with a free Spam Filter, SpamNabber, and easy-to-use control panel that allows you to limit spam right from your desktop via Cape.Com's Webmail system. While it won't stop 100% of all SPAM, it should eliminate about 80-90% of it. See the link below for more info.

If our mail servers block a connection from a given address, the machine will send a REJECT message back to the sender. This message will contain more information about why the message was rejected.

If you're receiving REJECT messages and cannot send email into our network, please contact us via our online contact form or by calling 508-539-9500.
