Avoiding Unsolicited Junk Email
Unfortunately, spam (unsolicited bulk email) is a big problem on the Internet. Be assured that Cape.Com has strict anti- spam and privacy policies, and will not sell, rent or give your email address to a third party. (see our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, below). If you are being disturbed by unsolicited or abusive email, here are some suggestions: Keeping Your Address Out Of The Hands Of Spammers- Add A Second Email Address For Public Use
You can add an associate user to your Cape.Com account for just $2/month. Your regular email address can be reserved for family, friends, and business associates, and the associate user's email address can be used for filling out online forms, posting to newsgroups or mailing lists, and anything that puts your email address out publicly where spammers could find it. The associate user's email address can be easily deleted and replaced if spammers do get hold of it, without interrupting any of your important correspondence. For more information, see the "Adding Additional Users" page, below. Alternatively, you could get a free email address from Yahoo (www.yahoo.com), Hotmail (www.hotmail.com), Juno (www.juno.com) or another online site. However, be aware that many "free" email addresses come with a price -- when these companies sell your email address to Internet marketers (aka spammers). - Address Munging
Spammers build their lists by harvesting addresses from legitimate mailing lists, web pages, and especially USENET newsgroups. When posting to any of these, you may wish to modify your email address to one that is incorrect (so address-harvesting programs will be fooled), but one which could be translated back to the correct address. (For example, changing username@cape.com to username@remove-this-to-reply.cape.com). - Anonymizer

Activate a Spam Filter- Cape.Com's Free SpamNabber and MailFilter tools
Cape.Com's MailFilter is a free service available to our customers as a method of controlling junk email. It will check for the following: First, the FROM field of the email is examined. If it contains an entry in the 'FROM field Allow' list, it is delivered to your main mailbox and all other filtering rules are bypassed.
Next, the TO field is examined. If it does NOT match with an entry in the 'TO field Only' list, the mail will be delivered to your junk mailbox.
The next step is to, again, examine the FROM field. If a match is found in the 'FROM field Reject' list, the mail will go to your junk box.
And finally, the powerful SpamNabber software is put into play, where the entire mail header and body are examined for patterns and characteristics of SPAM. If SpamNabber determines that this mail is Spam, the mail is delivered straight to your junk box. Please note that Cape.Com's free SpamNabber program can be activated, de-activated and controlled through your Cape.Com Webmail. Email that is caught by these spam filter tools will sit in your junk mailbox for 20 days or until 200 messages have accumulated, whichever comes first, and then be automatically deleted. Please note that mail in your junkbox is not backed up on our servers, and therefore, cannot be recovered. You can check the junk mailbox at any time by using Webmail. For help in using Webmail, see the Related Page below.
To start using Cape.Com's free spam tools including SpamNabber, simply login to Webmail, https://webmail.cape.com and select the "User Preferences" option; the "Mail Filter Setup" option provides additional filtering capabilities
After You've Been Spammed- Don't Reply To Spam Your email will probably bounce, since most return addresses on spam messages are invalid. If it doesn't bounce, then your reply confirms to the spammer that your email address is valid, and when they sell your email address to other spammers, they can charge more.

The mission of the Forum for Responsible and Ethical E-mail (FREE) is to stop the practice of sending unsolicited boilerplate broadcast messages through e-mail. FREE recognizes that because of the
cost-shifting aspects of unsolicited broadcast e-mail, the recipients and the providers who unwittingly assist in the delivery of such messages bear the majority of the cost. Therefore, it is our belief that such
practice is unethical and must be replaced by a system that requires recipients to agree beforehand to receive such messages.
