Trouble Getting To A Web Page?

Glossary Items:

Cape.Com continously monitors capacity load on our servers, and our systems are upgraded well before capacity is ever reached. If you are having problems connecting to the Internet or reaching a site(s), most likely the problem is not related to our capacity or number of Cape.Com users currently online. Check the information below to pinpoint the possible problem area.

  • Heavy Internet Activity Times

With more and more people using the Internet these days, peak online times are naturally occurring. Currently, these times tend to be between the hours of 3 pm and 11 pm EST. It starts when the children get home from school and gets progressively busier when the adults return from work until they go to sleep.

As more people use the Internet at the same time, there is always a strain on the flow of information. This strain happens when servers get overloaded for requests for information. Many times, it is not the server of the website you wish to view, but rather a server handling the data flow which gets hung up. Be assured that Cape.Com continously monitors capacity load on our servers, and our systems are upgraded well before capacity is ever reached. However, many other website owners do not. Try a traceroute below to see how information flows throughout the Internet.

  • Try Traceroute When you connect to a site on the Internet, your request is handed off through a series of computers before reaching its final destination. Temporary problems along the way can cause delays and in some instances your request never reaches its destination. Traceroute programs literally trace the route a packet of data takes as it moves through the Internet, identifying each site which handles the packet and the time taken to cross each link between these sites. This process can help to pinpoint any slowdowns or problems.

  • Typing In The Address At The Address Or Location Field?

When typing the address at the Address or Location field at the top of your browser, make sure the address is entered exactly correct, with no extra characters or missing characters and no empty spaces. Use the correct punctuation and capitalization, if required (hyphens, etc.).

  • Keep In Mind: Web sites can come, go, and move. It is possible that the site you are trying to visit may have a new address or may no longer be available.

  • Using Bookmarks or Favorites?

Bookmarks and Favorites can sometimes get corrupted. Try getting to the site by entering the address at the Address or Location field at the top of your browser, then hitting the Enter key. If this works, you may want to remove the Bookmark or Favorite and add it again.

  • Empty the cache on your web browser.

Web pages may be saved within Netscape or Internet Explorer; this can sometimes make browsing faster. However, these saved pages can get corrupted. When this happens, you can simply remove the cached copies of web pages, making your browser get fresh copies from the Internet.
