Website Tips and Tricks
The following features may be added to your website at no charge:- Forms:
The easiest way to permit users to submit information at your web site and have their responses emailed to you, is to use our form_submit script; see the "Form Submit" link below.
- Hit Counters:
For a fast, local Hit Counter, email support@cape.com and we'll pass along the details. Keep in mind, Weblogs provides more detailed information than the number of visitors, see the "Setting Up And Using Weblogs" page below.
- Telnet Access:
Telnet access to your ftp site provides you access to the "back-end" and enables you to run CGI-BIN scripts used in the processing of forms and other data at your web site. Email support@cape.com to add this service; for more information, see the "CGI Development, Telnet Access" page, below.
Other Hints:- If you're creating a new page, make sure you have a file called home.html in your public_html directory. This is what's sent to anyone going to your site. If you've provided no links on this page, visitors can go no further. When you finish with a page and want to publish it, either add a link to your home.html page or rename the new page home.html.
- Large image files can make your web pages agonizingly slow to download. Keep your pages perky by limiting the size of these files. Background images need not be more than 500 bytes (size of a postage stamp), since the image will be replicated to fill the browser's screen.
- When designing your pages, make them as "friendly" as possible to all sorts of browsers. If you're using HTML tags that only one or two browsers understand, visitors not using these will push on, quickly.
- Cape.Com is constantly adding new development tools for our customers. These include server side scripting languages, SQL database services, etc. Please refer to our "Advanced Web Development Tools" page below for more information.
