Adding A Basic FTP/Web Site To Your Account

Glossary Items:

  • Add/Activate Your FTP Site:

    1. Login to On-Line Accounting with your Cape.Com username and password.

    2. From the main On-Line Accounting screen, select the View, Add/Delete Services button.

    3. If there is not already a check in the Basic FTP/Web checkbox (*):

      • Place a check in the Basic FTP/Web checkbox
      • Click the Add/Delete Service(s) Now! button.
      • Return to the main On-Line Accounting screen and select the View, Add/Delete Services button.

  • Gather Information: The address of your FTP site appears in On-Line Accounting on the Basic FTP/Web line of the "View, Add/Delete Services" screen, and is in the form vsX.cape.com (The actual ftp address could be vsa.cape.com , vsb.cape.com, vsc.cape.com, etc.). This is the address that you will use with your FTP program to move files onto your site.

To access your site with a web browser, use the address www.vsX.cape.com/~yourusername, (substituting the appropriate letter for X; if you are not sure what the correct letter is, follow the instructions above to check On-Line Accounting). (If you would like a shorter/simpler web address, see the "Web Hosting Services And Pricing" page below for information on Enhanced FTP or Virtual Hosting).

The size of your web site also appears on this line; you may return to this screen at any time to check how much space your web site is using.

  • Access Your FTP Site:

    1. Obtain an FTP program. WS_FTP can be installed from Cape.Com's Easy Internet CD, or it is available at www.ipswitch.com. For Macs, Fetch is a good FTP program. More detailed help downloading and using WS_FTP and Fetch is available; see the Related Links below.

    2. Open WS_FTP. At the Session Properties screen:

      • For "Host Name/Address", enter your ftp address, vsX.cape.com (REMEMBER to substitute the appropriate letter for X; if you are not sure, please follow the instructions above to check your ftp address from On-Line Accounting). (ftp.vsX.cape.com will also work).
      • For "Host Type", select Automatic Detect.
      • For "User ID", enter your Cape.Com user name (without adding @cape.com to the end).
      • For "Password", enter your Cape.Com password, the same password you use to connect with us.

    3. Click OK to access your FTP/Web Site. The left side of the screen, or "Local System", is your hard drive; the right side of the screen, or "Remote System", is your FTP/Web site.

    4. Create a directory called public_html on your FTP/Web site; all files you wish to publish to your web site must go into this directory. On the right-hand side of the screen:

      • You should already be at the "root", or top, of your FTP/Web site. To verify this, find the box directly under "Remote System". This box shows which directory you are currently in; if you are at the root, you will see simply a forward slash (/). If you see anything else, click the green arrow to move up a directory until you get to the top.
      • Click the MkDir button.
      • At the prompt, name the directory public_html and click OK.

    5. Now that you have created the public_html directory, double-click it. The box under "Remote System" should display public_html to show you that you are in this directory.

    6. You are now ready to move files into your public_html directory. You can do this by finding the file you want to move on the left-hand side of your screen, clicking the file to highlight it, and then, in the middle of the screen, clicking the arrow pointing to the right.

      • The first page you will want to move onto your FTP/Web site is your home page. It must be named home.html or index.html (The extension .htm will also work). For help in creating this page, see the "Help In Creating Your Web Page Or Site" page below.

Costs:

  • A 10 MByte (personal) FTP/Web Site is included free with a Virtually Unlimited or Pro account; additional FTP/Web sites are $5/month. Please note that personal FTP/Web sites are not offered as a standalone service.

  • Additional Charges:

    • Additional storage above 10 MBytes: $2/month for each additional 10 Mbytes.

10 MBytes is more than enough for most sites. You can check how much space your web site is using at any time by going to On-Line Accounting, logging in with your Cape.Com user name and password, and clicking View/Add/Delete Services.

    • Internet Transfers above 100 Mbytes per month: $3 for each additional 100 Mbytes.

This refers to "hits" to your web site from the broader Web; hits from Cape.Com subscribers do not apply. It is rare to incur these charges; only very busy sites generate this amount of traffic. You may monitor your web site's traffic using Cape.Com's free Weblogs program.

    • Costs For Designing Your Web Site:

If you do not wish to design your web site yourself, please contact Cape.Com's Web Development Team at webdev@cape.com.

For information about getting your own domain (for example, www.yourname.com) hosted at Cape.Com, please visit our Web Hosting section.
