Help In Creating Your Web Page or Site

Glossary Items:

Below are some suggestions to help you get started creating a web page, whether it is for a domain or a personal web page.

KEEP IN MIND:

Cape.Com's free technical support for creating your web page is limited to:

  1. assisting you to add and access your FTP/Web site
  2. reminding you that the home page must be named either home.html or index.html (the extension .htm will also work) and that it must be inside the public_html directory.

Beyond this, additional Web Development charges would apply. Cape.Com has an experienced team of HTML professionals that are available for consultation; see the "Web Development Portfolio" and "WebPresence Package" pages below for more information.

  • Books:

We encourage people interested in learning how to create a web site get a good book on HTML from the library or bookstore. There are many excellent books available. for getting started, "Creating Web Pages for Dummies" is a good choice; on more advanced topics, any of the O'Reilly & Associates books are very good. See the Related Links below.

  • Online HTML tutorials:

See the Related Links below for "Let's Make Some HTML" and "HTML Guides and Tutorials (Yahoo)".

  • Web Authoring Tools:

    • HTML Editors require learning HTML but make hand-coding easier and allow you to control your code. There are many good HTML editors; our favorite is Allaire Homesite, which can be installed from Cape.Com's Easy Internet CD, or downloaded from the Related Link below.

    • WYSIWYG: Stands for "What You See Is What You Get", although this is often not the case. If you wish to use the WYSIWYG web authoring tool, Front Page, keep in mind that this program may be limiting depending on the intended use of the website. We strongly recommend using a different web authoring tool such as Adobe's GoLive, Netscape Composer, or NetObjects Fusion. Cape.Com, however, does provide server support for Front Page extensions.
