How to Use the Cape.Com Wireless Network

Glossary Items:

Getting Started

The following information details the requirements and steps needed to access the wireless network. Cape.Com offers the wireless network as a free service and does not provide personal technical support for such.

An 802.11b or higher wireless card is required to access the Cape.Com Wireless Network. You must configure your Wireless 802.11b enabled laptop or PDA to access the Cape.Com Wireless Hotspot. Instructions on how to set an SSID (Service Set Identifier, often referred to as a network name) differ between brands and models of wireless network cards. Refer to your wireless network card documentation for exact instructions on how to configure your device and set the SSID.

The Cape.Com SSID = capewifi

It must be entered in all lowercase letters. Generally, the SSID is set in the Network settings. Newer versions of Windows come with the Windows Zero Configuration (WZC) service, to assist you in 'joining' the Hotspot. 1. Click the "One or more wireless networks are available" message in the notification area of the desktop.
2. Click to select the wireless network in Connect to Wireless Network.
3. Click Connect.

Manual Configuration of SSID

On a Windows PC, this setting is typically found in the Network Control Panel. In Windows 95/98/Me, go to Control Panels and open the Network Control Panel; in Windows 2000/XP, right-click on My Network Places, double-click on your connection, and choose Properties. Select your Ethernet card device and press Configure; look under the Advanced tab. In Mac OS X, open the System Preferences application and choose the Network preferences pane. Choose the AirPort device and set the network name here. In Mac OS 7-9, open your AirPort control panel (via the Apple Menu or the control strip), and check the box labeled "Allow selection of closed networks." Then, choose "Other..." as your AirPort Network in the AirPort control panel. It will prompt you for a name and a password. Enter the SSID in the name field ("capewifi" - must be entered in all lowercase letters), and leave the password field blank. Apple AirPort users must be running version 1.2 or higher of the AirPort software in order to be able to set the SSID value. NOTE: For all Devices and Operating Systems, WEP should be off/disabled. This is a public unencrypted network.

Logging on to the Cape.Com Wireless Network

Once your wireless device is equipped with the 802.11b wireless card, and preferences properly configured, you can begin using the Cape.Com Wireless Network. Look for the Cape.Com Wireless Hotspot symbol to insure you are logging onto our network. Then, simply open your browser and the Cape.Com Wireless login screen will appear. Enter your cape.com username and password, or guest information for the free trial, and you are ready to go. Cape.Com users have free, unlimited access to the wireless network, and will be given preference upon login. Guest users are entitled to a free 1-hour trial per login. Please note: Cape.Com offers their wireless network as a free community service and does not provide personal technical support for such.
