What is Broadband Voice?

Broadband Voice, also known as Voice-over IP (VoIP), is a new technology where voice communications are delivered using the Internet Protocol (IP). Simply put, your everyday telephone calls can be made using the power of the Internet, and answered just like you would any telephone call -- by picking up the phone -- at a substantial savings over telephone company calling plans. It works for local, long distance, and international calling. Calls can be placed using your home or business phone, cell phone, even a pay phone!

What are the advantages of Broadband Voice?

Broadband Voice calling avoids the long-distance tolls and per-call connection charges imposed by telephone companies. In addition, Broadband Voice per minute rates are much lower as it is more economical to use the Internet to transmit voice traffic than traditional land-line methods. How much does Broadband Voice cost?

Pay just 2.5 cents/minute on our US calling plans. Choose from 600 or 1000 minute plans. Or if you prefer, pay as you go for just 3.5 cents/minute within the continental United States and as low as 3.5 cents/minute internationally. There are no setup fees when using the Broadband Voice card (described below), however, there is a one-time hardware fee for the VoIP device required to setup Broadband Voice services on your Cape.Com DSL or T1 line.

Broadband Voice with DSL & T1 connections

A more efficient and permanent means of taking advantage of all the benefits of Broadband Voice is to equip your Cape.Com DSL or T1 connection with a VoIP device which allows traffic from your internal phone lines to automatically pass through your high-speed connection. With this set-up, there is no need to regularly enter access numbers or PINs. Simply make the calls as you normally would, and the VoIP device handles the "behind the scenes" transmission over the Internet. One-time hardware fees apply, and you must subscribe to a monthly Voice plan (600 or 1000 minutes).

Do I need special equipment?

With the Broadband Voice calling card, you do not need any special equipment to start using our voice services. Just enter the nearest voice access number, then your PIN, and the telephone number you are calling. If you wish to have your Cape.Com DSL or T1 connection used for Broadband Voice calling, you would need a VoIP device to transmit the voice traffic directly. Contact Cape.Com for hardware details.

How long has this VoIP technology been around?

Similar technology has been used to transmit long-distance calls by the telephone companies for several years now. After making significant investments, enterprises and large corporations have adopted VoIP technology over the last 2-3 years in dramatic fashion. Cape.Com's technical support group has been using VoIP technology daily since October 2003. There are several million people already using VoIP services in the US alone, and many more worldwide. Many people don't even know they are using it! Obviously, it is a proven technology here to stay.

Are there any restrictions with Broadband Voice?

Just one - should you wish to have your DSL or T1 line carry your Voice calls, we do require that you be on a Voice plan, i.e., 600 or 1000 minutes/month. It is also recommended that you have your internet access through Cape.Com when using the Voice Card to fully enjoy the savings, quality and convenience of Broadband Voice, however, it is not a necessary requirement.

How do I get billed for Broadband Voice services?

Call activity and applicable charges for Broadband Voice services will appear on your regular monthly invoice from Cape.Com. All calls are billed according to plan selected and the Broadband Voice International Rate Finder. When your allocated plan minutes are exceeded, a per minute charge will apply, with usage rounded to the next full-minute. Cape.Com Broadband Voice does not charge any per-call connection fees like conventional calling plans. And unlike other telephone companies, Cape.Com does not charge taxes, fees or surcharges of any kind.

* It is recommended that you have internet access with Cape.Com to enjoy the savings, quality and convenience of Broadband Voice. The 30-day free trial covers a maximum of 600 minutes ($15) of calling within the continental US, and charges will be refunded only if the service is unsatisfactory and cancelled within 30 days of activation. If VoIP adapter hardware is purchased from Cape.Com and service is cancelled within 30 days, the hardware may be returned for a refund as long as it is returned in good working order with the original box and documentation.
